Fundada en un garaje de Las Vegas por Brett W. Sperry y Louis Castle como Westwood Associates, pronto ganó fama con juegos de mucho renombre, algunos considerados obras maestras.
En 1992 fue adquirida por Virgin Interactive, que en 1998 la vendió a Electronic Arts. Finalmente, esta última cerró Westwood en 2003 tras el fracaso de Command & Conquer: Renegade, y muchos de sus empleados pasaron a EA Los Angeles, que continúa desarrollando juegos de la franquicia Command & Conquer.
