Descripción

Septiembre de 1940. La guerra se extiende por Europa mientras resuena el fragor de la Batalla de Inglaterra. Hércules Poirot se encuentra recluido tras las oscuras cortinas de su despacho en la inmaculada mansión de Whitehaven. Arthur Hastings disfruta a su lado de una de sus historias sobre cómo unas vacaciones de verano paradisíacas se volvieron mortales. Poco después de que Poirot llegara al hotel El fin del contrabandista, un huésped aparece salvajemente asesinado.

Poirot resolvió el misterio en un sólo día; y ahora se pregunta si su amigo Hastings hubiera resultado igual de eficaz. Provocado por su amigo, Hastings retrocede en el tiempo acompañado de Poirot para revivir todos los hechos que acontecieron y comprobar si es capaz de llegar a las mismas conclusiones reveladoras que el mismo Poirot.

Toma el papel de Hastings (¡que a su vez está en el papel de Poirot!) mientras revives la dramática confluencia de gente, circunstancias, oscuros secretos y motivos que culminan en el crimen. Tal y como el omnisciente Poirot entonaba inocentemente el día antes del crimen, "El cielo está despejado... el mar está azul... pero la maldad acecha bajo el sol".
