- Dear Esther fue concebido como un mod para Half-Life 2. Rápidamente logró aceptación por parte de la comunidad, sencillamente por su atrapante historia y lo inusual de su propuesta. En 2009, Robert Briscoe, un talentoso artista del mundo de los videojuegos (diseñador de una parte de Mirror's Edge) se une al desarrollo del juego, modificando radicalmente el arte del juego, dotándolo de una calidad visual increíble. Finalmente, en 2010 Valve decide darle el empujón final, dándole soporte al proyecto y proveyendo la licencia del engine Source para que el juego pueda ser lanzado al mercado.
- Traducción al español a nivel amateur por Francisco J. Galdo. Voces narrador dobladas al español a nivel amateur por José Francisco Castellano.
- Dear Esther: Landmark Edition posee un modo con comentarios del director que permite explorar la isla y descubrir qué inspiró la creación del juego a manos de The Chinese Room y Rob Briscoe.

- Las instrucciones para aplicar la traducción con Steam están dentro del paquete de traducción.
- Una alternativa para aplicar la traducción es aplicar el Update v1.0r13. Luego renombrar los archivos de la traducción de spanish a english y copiar sobreescibiendo en
C:\Archivos de programa\The Chinese Room\Dear Esther\dearesther\resource
