Después de la muerte de su hermana de 9 años en la Mansión Ramsey en Boulder, Colorado, una joven llamada Emily comienza a experimentar sueños lúcidos que le permiten comunicarse con la difunta Annabelle. Al principio, Emily cree que esto no es más que una manifestación de su dolor, pero "la intensidad de estos episodios comienza a aumentar gradualmente, y está convencida de que el alma de la pequeña Anabelle está atrapada de alguna manera en el purgatorio ... ¡y necesita ayuda!
