Peter Wright lleva bastantes días de insomnio. No se acostumbra a vivir en soledad. La desaparición de su familia en un accidente, y la entrada de un equipo de asalto en el piso de su vecino, arrasando con la puerta y actuando con bastante violencia, puede con su curiosidad. De esta forma, Peter, una persona con un trabajo estable como diseñador gráfico y con un status económico decente, decide investigar, con el permiso de la mujer del vecino, acerca de qué le puede haber pasado para haber recibido ese asalto. Se cruzará con cosas inimaginables, que le harán replantearse sus ideas de libertad y justicia, y tendrá que arriesgar su vida y el de todos sus - escasos - seres queridos para llegar a la temible verdad de un futuro imperfecto.
