Electronic Arts (EA) es una famosa compañía desarrolladora y distribuidora fundada en 1982. Con sede en Redwood City (California), EA distribuye sus productos en 75 países de todo el mundo.

Historia

En 1982 nace Electronic Arts como compañía distribuidora, creada por Trip Hawkins, un empresario estadounidense. Durante sus primeros años la compañía se dedica a los juegos de azar, y fue centrándose poco a poco en juegos de otros géneros como la estrategia, hasta que en la década siguiente una fuerte inversión y una extensa y agresiva campaña publicitaria acompañarían al nuevo rumbo de la compañía, el lanzamiento de una amplia gama de simuladores deportivos, entre ellos el conocido FIFA International Soccer, el primer simulador de fútbol en incorporar el nombre e indumentaria de cada jugador y equipo real.

A FIFA International Soccer y las diversas campañas, se sumaron los lanzamientos para consola, primero principalmente Mega Drive y Super Nintendo, y más tarde para las consolas de 5ª generación. Mientras se consolidaba la compañía como desarrolladora, pero sobre todo como gran distribuidora de videojuegos, EA se dispuso a ampliar sus fronteras con la compra de pequeñas desarrolladoras, convirtiéndose en un auténtico imperio de la industria.

En 1991 Electronic Arts compra Distinctive Software (DSI), los creadores de Test Drive y Stunts, y la desarrolladora pasa a ser conocida como EA Canada.
En 1992 EA se hace con Origin Systems, una conocida compañía desarrolladora que cerraría en 2004.
En 1995 los estudios de Bullfrog, creadores de juegos como Theme Park, se convierten en parte de EA. En 2001 desaparecen.
En 1997 EA compra Maxis, el estudio de Will Wright, tomando el control sobre SimCity 3000. Al año siguiente este estudio crearía Los Sims.
En 1998 adquieren Westwood Studios, tomando el control de la exitosa franquicia Command & Conquer, pero en 2003 este estudio se declara en bancarrota.
En 2002 se une al imperio de EA la desarrolladora Black Box Games, que se convierte en EA Black Box y posteriormente se une a EA Canada cerrando sus estudios originales.
En 2005 la compañía compra Criterion Studios, e intenta hacerse con la gran Ubisoft, pero no lo consigue. Ese mismo año se hace con las licencias exclusivas de la NFL e intenta lo mismo, sin éxito, con la NBA.
En 2008 EA adquiere BioWare y Pandemic Studios

Gracias a esta expansión masiva, Electronic Arts se convierte, en la primera década del siglo XI, en la segunda compañía más rentable de la industria del videojuego, por detrás tan sólo de Nintendo.

Estructura

Electronic Arts posee una estructura que la divide en tres sectores, cada uno enfocado a un tipo de software y público.

  • EA Sports:
La marca con la que EA desarrolla y publica sus grandes sagas de simuladores deportivos, la parte de la compañía que le permitió alcanzar el éxito, con juegos como FIFA International Soccer, NHL Hockey, o NASCAR.
  • EA Games:
La marca con la que EA lanza todos los juegos para PC y consola de otras temáticas, y que engloba la gran mayoría de sus estudios de desarrollo.
  • EA Play:
